A prominent surgeon in his specialty field, Dr. Cummings currently serves as the Director of Otolaryngology ? Head and Neck Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He has also served as Chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Otolaryngology ? Head and Neck Surgery and Chairman of the Advisory Council for Otolaryngology to American College of Surgeons.
He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College, his M.D. from the University of Virginia and completed his otolaryngology- head and neck residency at Harvard. Dr. Cummings led a private practice in Boston for several years and then became an Associate Professor at the State University of New York (SUNY). He served as Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington until 1990, and from 1991 to present is The Andelot Professor and Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins. He was chief of staff of The Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1997 to 1999 and serves on the Board of Directors for Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Dr. Cummings is a past-president of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery and has served on the Board of the American Board of Otolaryngology for 18 years. Additionally, he is a past-president of the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology ? Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery, and American Bronchoesophagological Society.
Dr. Cummings has written over 125 scientific papers and is the senior editor of Otolaryngology ? Head and Neck Surgery. He also co-authored two surgical atlases, one on laryngeal surgery and another on surgical access and reconstruction.
