Dr. Espada is Clinical Professor of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center. He also serves as the Medical Director for International Services at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Espada performs approximately 800 cardiothoracic procedures each year in the United States and another 300 in Guatemala, where he obtained funding in 1995 to open Guatemala?s first cardiac center. This center provides adult and pediatric cardiac care for the indigent population of the country. Dr. Espada also serves as the medical director for this unit and provides training for surgeons and residents in Guatemala. Dr. Espada received his doctorate at San Carlos University in Guatemala and performed his surgery internship residency training in general and thoracic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Espada also received advanced training from Harvard University, Massachusetts; LeClub Mitrale, France; and other highly recognized international institutions. Dr. Espada has received numerous awards and recognitions including: Honorary Doctorate from the University of Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala, Honorary Professor from Universidad LaSalle in Mexico, Governors award from The Chest Foundation, Paul Harris Award from the International Rotary Society, among many others. Dr. Espada has more than 60 publications to his credit including book chapters as well as peer-reviewed articles. He is involved in numerous research activities and is the principal investigator for the NIH National Emphysema Treatment Trial at The Methodist Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.
