Dr. Gelfand joined the Massachusetts General Hospital, Partners Healthcare System and Harvard Medical School as Senior Advisor for International Medical Affairs, Senior Attending Physician, and Visiting Professor in November 1999. Previously, he was Dean for Research at the Tufts University School of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Research and Technology at the New England Medical Center. He also was the Sheldon M. Wolff, M.D. Professor of Medicine and Chairman for the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Gelfand has conducted laboratory and clinical research on inflammatory processes, focusing on angioedema, wound healing, fever, the acute phase response and shock. He developed the current therapy for hereditary angioedeme with Danazol, also first using that drug in autoimmune thrombocytopenia. Both therapies have been standard therapy for over two decades. He is widely consulted clinically for his expertise in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Allergy and Immunology. He is currently working on immunological aspects of aging and cancer.
He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and subsequently attended Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute of Health for his clinical training. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Immunology and Allergy. He has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards and citations.
